PM2.5 particles are pollutants generally caused by vehicles and heavy traffic. High levels of PM2.5 have severe consequences for human health causing cardiac and pulmonary problems. Children and the elderly remain the most at risk.

The Annual Conference 'Green Lungs for Our Cities' is held on alternative monitoring of air, noise and urban greenery where the first monitoring was presented in some of the areas in Tirana, Elbasan, Shkodra, and Durres. This conference was held as part of a project funded by the European Union and implemented by the Co-PLAN Institute for Habitat Development and Milieukontakt Albania (member of Milieukontakt International Network). Representatives of civil society, academics, field experts, students, and interested citizens were present.
The first findings of alternative monitoring for air quality, noise, and urban greenery in the cities of Tirana, Durres, Shkodra, and Elbasan are presented. The data obtained from the monitoring so far and those that will follow will be reflected in the online platform in real-time, public, and readable by all interested parties.

From April 2018 until today in the frame of Green Lungs project financed by the European Union, Milieukontakt Albania and Co-Plan have monitored the air quality in 84 different monitoring stations in Tirana city.
